Groton Utilities’ Position On Pharmaceuticals in the Environment
• Groton Utilities is concerned that chemical constituents
of pharmaceuticals and self care products are being observed
in the environment. We understand that the primary way these
products can enter the environment is through wastewater
treatment plant discharges to a water body that is subsequently
used by a water system as a water source. This does not
occur in the State of Connecticut. By law, no waste water
treatment plant can discharge into a potential watershed
or water source of any water system.
• Groton Utilities Water Division does not test for pharmaceuticals
in its drinking water. Neither the state, nor the federal
government requires water utilities to test for them. However,
we are planning on testing for pharmaceuticals in our drinking
water in the future. We are 100% compliant with all local,
state and federal drinking water and environmental regulations

Community Service Award Recipient is Sarah Stanley
Sarah Stanley is the recipient of the 2008 Jacqueline B.
Nixon Community Service Award for her many years of “Giving
Back to the Community”. Frank E. Winkler, Manager, Economic
Development for Groton Utilities, presented the award to
Stanley at the annual City of Groton Day celebration on
August 1.
Stanley has volunteered endless hours at Fairview (The
Odd Fellows Home). She has been described as a person whose
selflessness appears to have no bounds. She has given so
much of herself throughout the years and asked nothing in
return. As Stanley told one staffer, “”It’s not about what
I can get from them, it’s about what they can get from me.”
