Beacon Light Bulbs

Photo of Beacon LightGroton Utilities is promoting Emergency Beacon light bulbs at cost in conjunction with Public Power Week. Customers can purchase the bulbs for $6 each. The Emergency Beacon normally retails for $19.95.

In a related part of the program, Groton Utilities said it would be offering the Emergency Beacon lights free to all customers on life support systems.

“We are a safety conscious utility with our employees, and it is only appropriate that we emphasize safety with our customers,” Alfred C. Dion, General Manager of Customer Care, said in announcing the Emergency Beacon program.

Each October, public power communities like the City of Groton, celebrate and promote the advantages of owning and operating a community utility. “This is the time to demonstrate how Groton Utilities is at the community’s service and providing value to its customers,” Dion emphasized. Groton Utilities is one of 2,000 municipally owned and operated electric utilities in the country.

With the double flick of a switch, the Emergency Beacon can assist 911 responders in finding a residence faster during a crisis. Under normal use this 60-watt bulb works like an ordinary light bulb. But in an emergency, the customer simply turns the light switch twice (on-off-on) and it instantly becomes a flashing signal for help. The Beacon pinpoints the location of the crisis and helps emergency personnel reach the scene more quickly, day or night.

The Emergency Beacon light will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis and as long as the supply lasts. Customers are reminded that they must be able to show proof that they are Groton Utilities customers and therefore eligible for the special $6 price. It is recommended that customers bring a copy of a recent utility bill when purchasing the lights.

Customers can purchase the light bulbs at the Customer Care Center at 295 Meridian Street during normal business hours: Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursdays from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 8am until noon except for holidays.
